Network device management for NSW Energy Utility

Posted – 25 August 2025

Automation of network device configuration management and governance.

Business Problem

A tier one energy distributor in New South Wales was facing significant challenges in managing the configuration of its networked devices and connected systems. All configuration activities were performed manually, with no centralised tracking or record of historical configurations. This lack of visibility made it difficult to ensure consistency, troubleshoot issues, or demonstrate compliance.

Manual processes also introduced substantial operational risk. Without standardised workflows or automated safeguards, changes were often applied inconsistently across environments. As a result, configuration errors accounted for nearly 81% of the client’s network outages, directly impacting service reliability and customer trust. The absence of a structured and auditable configuration management approach not only increased downtime but also made it harder for the organisation to scale and modernise its operations effectively.

DeployPartners Solution

To address these challenges, a senior engineer designed and delivered a suite of playbooks that automated the full lifecycle of network configuration management. The playbooks were integrated with a dedicated network configuration management tool, ensuring that changes could be executed consistently, validated automatically, and rolled back if required.

For historical visibility, the solution was connected to a central configuration repository, enabling the client to maintain an auditable record of every configuration version across all networked devices and systems. This provided clear traceability, improved troubleshooting, and gave operational teams confidence in the accuracy of their environment.

The solution was integrated with the client’s ITSM platform. All CRs and SRs were linked to ITSM records, ensuring operational activity could be tracked end-to-end. This reduced risk, embedded governance and transformed conf management from a manual, error-prone process into a streamlined, automated practice.
