Hosting this Executive Lunch was a highlight of our week in New Zealand. We spent time discussing the challenges of understanding, mapping and obtaining visibility as a further step toward responding to and managing the value of Cloud & AI spend.
Some key takeaways from the day:
The immediate FinOps challenge facing organisations relates to AI spend. It is clear that organisations are focusing on granular tracking of consumption against a business outcome to determine ROI, and they need improved capabilities to support this. Tracking SaaS consumption is an area of interest and most attendees need improved visibility here. Although AI is of immediate concern, multi-cloud consumption management and allocation remains an issue for some.
A poll of the attendees established the following:
– Most organisations track AI spend through SaaS or via CSP’s. Tokens, GPU and API costs are rarely tracked.
– Based on attendee opinions, the most effective governance action indicated is tracking live token consumption attributed to a Business Unit or Team.
– Organisations have yet to identify effective ROI metrics beyond financial goals.

What was common amongst attendees at the event and from our broader conversations is that increasing investment in AI adds another layer of complexity across cloud environments. This presents a challenge in consolidating information to provide a unified view.
